The French West African territories of French Sudan and Senegal became autonomous within the French Community in Nov. 1958 as the République soudanaise (with its capital at Bamako) and the État du Sénégal (later, according to its constitution of 1959, République du Sénégal). In Apr. 1959 the two republics each continuing its own government, became the member states of the Federation of Mali. The Federation was dissolved in Aug. 1960 when Senegal withdrew and declared its independence. In Sept. 1960 the République soudanaise withdrew from the French Community and changed its name to République du Mali. Works by the governments of French Sudan, the autonomous République soudanaise, and the République du Mali (the later name of the République soudanaise) are found under the following headings, according to the above chronology: French Sudan. Sudanese Republic. Mali. All works by Senegal, regardless of the status of its government, are found under Senegal. Works by the Federation of Mali are found under Mali Federation. SUBJECT ENTRY: Works about these republics separately are entered under Mali and Senegal, regardless of period covered. Works about the Federation of Mali for the period 1959-60 are entered under Mali Federation.
